One of my favorite discoveries this year at the Festival International de Jazz de Montreal was Thai-Quebec drummer Salin. While still in her teens, Salin became one of the top session pop music drummers in Bangkok. Eventually migrating to Montreal, she went from playing heavy metal to soul/funk and eventually to her own original music, exploring the intersection of Thai and African rhythms.
